Project files can easily be opened via TextEdit, and their sections can be readily ascertained: "First thing to know is that the iMovie project file itself is a flat text file(!) that dictates the sequencing and modifications made to the original clip files, which live in the "Media" folder of each project. While we've yet to to track down an exact cause for this issue related to sleep, MacFixIt reader Doug Alexander has some excellent suggestions for rescuing corrupt, or otherwise unreadable iMovie files: In one case, a user put his machine to sleep, and upon waking it later, found his iMovie project unable to open, with the error message "Your project file is not readable" displayed. We previously reported an issue with corrupt iMovie files.
